Joseph Wendel

Joseph Cardinal Wendel ( born May 27, 1901 in Blieskastel, † December 31, 1960 in Munich) was Archbishop of Munich and Freising.

Life

Joseph Wendel was born in the then Bavarian Palatinate Saarland. After high school and university he received on 30 October 1927 in Rome by Cardinal Basilio Pompilj the priesthood.

In 1941 he was called by Pope Pius XII. appointed Titular Bishop of Lebessus ( Lebissos ) in Lycia and appointed Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Speyer. He received his episcopal consecration on June 29, 1941 Speyer Bishop Ludwig Sebastian; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Würzburg, Matthias Ehrenfried, and the then Auxiliary Bishop of Bamberg, Joseph Otto Kolb. In 1943 he was appointed Bishop of Speyer. In 1952, he was the successor to Michael Cardinal von Faulhaber on the chair of the Archbishop of Munich and Freising.

Even as a bishop of Speyer helix was involved in Jerusalem in the construction of a southern German Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave. In November 1952, the Honorary Grand Prior of the Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Nicola Canali in Rome took place.

On January 12, 1953, he was named by Pope Pius XII. Cardinal and took him as Cardinal Priest of Santa Maria Nuova in the College of Cardinals.

In 1956, he became the first bishop of the newly established military Bundeswehr. In 1960, he organized the International Eucharistic Congress in Munich, which also meant the theological climax of his career.

He died after the New Year's Eve sermon in the same year.

Wendel was an honorary member of the K.D.St.V. Aenania Munich and the K.D.St.V. Tuiskonia Munich in the CV and the K.S.St.V. Alemannia München in CT. Joseph Wendel joined as a chaplain at after retreat in Schoenstatt movement of the same name. Besides his work as director of the Episcopal study home in Speyer, he led the Schoenstatt Movement in the Diocese of Speyer. The retreat to his episcopal ordination held him the founder of the Schoenstatt Movement, Father Joseph Kentenich

Episcopal Coat of Arms

The coat of arms shows in box 1 and 3, a white cross on a blue field, the Bishopric of Speyer Coat of Arms. In section 2, and 4, the personal coat of arms, on a blue background on a waveband a white dove and below a crown. The crown stands for the kingdom of Christ ( Christ the King ), the water above the bar indicates the water of baptism, through which one enters the kingdom of Christ. Twice is about the Dove: A symbol of the Holy Spirit of love and truth.

The words of his coat of arms award, " Veritati et Caritati " refer to the realm of truth ( " Veritati " ) and love ( " Caritati " ), wanted to serve the Cardinal Wendel: Especially in times of contempt of faith such as during the Third Empire, when Joseph Wendel, saying elected.
