Josephine Hull

Josephine Hull ( * January 3, 1877 or 1886 in Newtonville, † March 12, 1957 in New York; born Josephine Sherwood ) was an American actress.

Life

Josephine Sherwood studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and at Radcliffe College. 1905 began her acting career on the stage under her birth name. 1910, she married Shelly Hull and entered from then on under the name Josephine Hull. 1926 Hull managed the breakthrough on Broadway in the Pulitzer Prize- winning work of Craig's Wife by George Kelly. In the coming decades, they enjoyed great Broadway successes with You Can not Take It With You, Arsenic and Old Lace, and the also awarded the Pulitzer Prize- piece My friend Harvey.

Away from the theater stage played Josephine Hull in five movies. Below in the screen adaptation of Arsenic and Old Lace (1944 ), based on the same piece, with Cary Grant and Peter Lorre. As previously on Broadway, she gave the role of the lovable serial killer again with Jean Adair. 1950 Hull played alongside James Stewart in My friend Harvey. For her performance was Josephine Hull 1951 respectively Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Josephine Hull died on March 12, 1957 of a cerebral hemorrhage.
