Joshua Cushman

Joshua Cushman (* April 11, 1761 in Halifax, Massachusetts, † January 27, 1834 in Maine, Maine ) was an American politician. Between 1819 and 1821 he represented the state of Massachusetts, and from 1821 to 1825 the state of Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Joshua Cushman was even born during the British colonial period. Between 1777 and 1780 he was during the Revolutionary War soldier in the American Continental Army. Then he studied until 1787 at Harvard University. After a subsequent study of theology Cushman was ordained a priest. He moved to Winslow, which until 1820 was part of Massachusetts and then fell to the new state of Maine. There he spent 20 years as pastor of the Congregational Church.

Politically, Cushman member of the Democratic- Republican Party. In 1810 he sat in the Massachusetts Senate; 1812 to 1812 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the State. In 1818 he was in the 19th electoral district of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he entered on March 4, 1819, to succeed Joshua Gage. After the founding of Maine Cushman district fell to this new state. Therefore, he was elected in 1820 for the sixth district of the new state again in the Congress. After the 1822 elections, he joined the fourth district in the footsteps of William D. Williamson. Overall Cushman graduated between 4 March 1819 and the March 3, 1825 three related end legislatures in Congress. During this time, the Missouri Compromise worked out by Henry Clay was adopted. Thus, the new state of Maine was founded in which slavery was prohibited, while she was in the state of Missouri, which was also admitted to the Union, allowed.

After the dissolution of his party in the 1820s Cushman joined the movement to President John Quincy Adams, who stood in opposition to Andrew Jackson and his later founded the Democratic Party. In 1828, Cushman was a member of the Senate of Maine; from 1 January 1834 to his death on 27 January of the same year he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from Maine. He has been sitting in both chambers of the respective state legislatures of Massachusetts and Maine, and represent both states and in the U.S. House of Representatives. Joshua Cushman was buried in Augusta.
