Josiah Bushnell Grinnell

Josiah Bushnell Grinnell ( born December 22, 1821 in New Haven, Addison County, Vermont, † March 31, 1891 in Grinnell, Iowa ) was an American politician. Between 1863 and 1867 he represented the state of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Josiah Grinnell attended the common schools and the Oneida Institute. Then he studied until 1847 at the Auburn Theological Seminary theology. After his graduation, he was ordained to the clergy of the Presbyterian Church. In the following years he was also in Washington DC operate and New York City as a pastor. In 1854 he moved to Iowa, where he founded the city named after him Grinnell in Poweshiek County. He was there also the founder of Grinnell College.

Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party, founded in 1854. Between 1856 and 1860, Grinnell was sitting in the Senate of Iowa. He was one of the directors of the railway company Skirt Iceland Railroad and president of the Horticultural Society ( Horticultural Society ) of Iowa. He was also president of the First National Bank in Grinnell. Josiah Grinnell died on 31 March 1891 he founded the city Grinnell and was also buried there.
