Josiah Parsons Cooke

Josiah Parsons Cooke ( born October 12, 1827 in Boston; † 3 September 1894 in Newport, Rhode Iceland ) was an American chemist.

He studied from 1844 to 1848 at Harvard University. After spending a year he was at Harvard in 1849, first tutor for mathematics, lecturer, and in 1850 finally professor of chemistry and mineralogy. In his first scientific paper in 1852, he described an arsenic crystal. As an essential merit is considered to be used for increasing the practical relevance in chemistry courses at schools. His book The New Chemistry of 1872 was translated into several languages. Also published in 1880 his study on the weight of the antimony atom was internationally respected.
