Josip Perković

Josip Perković aka Tomo Novakovic ( born May 17, 1945 in Lika Novo Selo, Municipality Našice ) is a former employee of the UDBA, the Yugoslav secret service and various Croatian secret services. He is a Croatian citizen. He was - until his arrest on 1 January 2014 in Zagreb - in connection with the murder of exiled Croats and dissident Stjepan Đureković of the most wanted persons of the German Federal Criminal Police Office ( BKA). For him there was a European arrest warrant.

Josip Perković worked until 1990 when the Yugoslav secret police UDBA. During this time he was head of the Croatian branch of the SDS ( State Security Service ), which mainly dealt with Croatian emigrants and dissidents abroad. According to the BKA said to have instigated a Croat in 1977 to the murder of two living in Germany Croats. Above all, he was wanted in connection with the held on July 28, 1983 murder of Stjepan Đureković with International arrest warrant.

Early 1990s was Perković responsible for the establishment of the intelligence network in the independent Croatia, the formation of the secret nature of the defense and interior ministries go back to him. He was head of the Croatian Military Intelligence and exercised more different functions in these areas from. In recent years Perković worked as a consultant of the inner intelligence and a lecturer at the military college. In the course of Croatia's accession negotiations with the European Union and the expected accession of Croatia to the EU ( 2013) Perković or the question of his extradition to Germany was a political issue. Three days before the Croatian accession to the EU, the Croatian Parliament passed a special law, which prohibited the extradition of persons for crimes committed before 7 August 2002 crime. The European Commission subsequently announced on sanctions against Croatia. Croatia changed under pressure from the EU once again the law. With the entry into force of the law on extradition of suspected criminals on 1 January 2014 Perković was arrested the same day by Croatian authorities in Zagreb. Two days later he was set free again, but was not allowed to leave the country. On January 24, 2014 Perković was extradited to Germany.
