Jouarre Abbey
The Notre- Dame de Jouarre Abbey is a Benedictine abbey in the village of Jouarre in the Seine -et -Marne in France.
History
The abbey was founded in the 7th century under the influence of the Holy Columbanus of Luxeuil as a double monastery for men and women and is still inhabited by a Benedictine community. In the 9th and 10th century, the abbey was an important place of pilgrimage in the 11th and 12th developed around the abbey a fortified settlement, the modern city Jouarre.
1571 converted to Protestantism, Abbess Charlotte de Bourbon- Montpensier fled to Germany and later married William of Orange.
