Jounieh, Arabic جونية, DMG Dschūniya, is a city in Lebanon. It has around 350,000 inhabitants together with its suburbs and is located north of Beirut. In the mid- 20th century, the city was a quiet fishing village. The proximity to Beirut and the location in the bay below Harissa (Lebanon), a Christian pilgrimage site, Jounieh, however, soon became a popular building area. The buildings along the coast highway south to the capital over to the north, the beach upmarket hotels and condominium towers extend seamlessly to Byblos.

Buildings and meaning

Jounieh is a predominantly Christian inhabited city. The monastery Bkerke on a hill east of the city is the seat of the Patriarch of the Maronite Church, the largest Christian group in Lebanon. The town also has the Maronite Holy Spirit University is established. Meanwhile, however, Jounieh is also famous for its numerous beach cafes, bars, nightclubs and luxury hotels. A marina is part of the cityscape. 1965, a gondola from Jounieh to Harissa statue of Mary was built, which is often used by Lebanese and tourists.
