Jovan Jovanović Zmaj

Jovan Jovanović Zmaj ( Cyrillic Јован Јовановић Змај; * November 24, 1833 in Novi Sad, † June 3, 1904 in Sremska Kamenica ) was a Serbian poet of 19th century romanticism.

Zmaj worked as a pediatrician, but became known as a poet. He is considered one of the most prolific Serbian poets of the second half of the 19th century. Zmaj worked as chief editor of numerous magazines, such as the magazine " 3 Maj " (May 3 ), how it got its nickname Zmaj ( " Dragon " ) originates, as well as the magazine for children Невен / Neven ( " Marigold "). Although he owes his fame mainly of children poetry, he tested also in other genera, such as in the love poetry, the didactic poem, political satire, or patriotic -themed poetry.

Among his most famous works are Ђулићи / Đulići ( " Roses" ) and Ђулићи увеоци / Đulići uveoci ( "withered roses ").

Zmaj also worked as a translator and translated the poems of Sándor Petőfi, Goethe, Heine, Lermontov and Tennyson into Serbian.
