Jovy Marcelo

Edward Jovy Marcelo ( born July 21, 1965 in Quezon City, † 15 May 1992, Indianapolis, Indiana) was a Filipino race car driver. He won the 1991 Atlantic Championship.

Career

Jovy Marcelo comes from a motorsport family. His father Eddie Marcelo had driven dragster, motorcycle and motorboat races. His brother John Marcelo was initially active as a racing driver and later attended jet ski race.

Marcelo began his motor racing career at the age of eleven years in karting. With the support of his father, he made his debut in 1989 in Formula racing. He first entered the British Formula Vauxhall and 1990 in the New Zealand Formula Pacific at. 1990 began to Marcelo also to race in the United States, where he studied.

Marcelo started first in the Atlantic Championship. His main focus was on the West series where behind Mark Dismore was runner-up. In addition, he appeared also in the East series. With wins at Lime Rock and Nazareth, he won a race depending on a oval or road course. 1992 was Marcelo's main focus, however, on the Indy Car World Series. There he had received a cockpit in a Lola -Cosworth at Euro Motorsport. After he finished the race in 14th place at the season opener at Surfers Paradise, he left in the next two races, finishing 19th position respectively. On May 15, Marcelo had in training for the next race, the Indianapolis 500, a fatal accident. He lost in the curve 1, the control of his vehicle and struck the left side into the barriers a.
