Joyce Culpeper

Joyce Culpeper (* 1480 /1; † around 1521/5 ), sometimes referred to as Jocasta Culpeper, was the mother of Catherine Howard, Henry VIII, who later married and became the Queen of England. Due to their origin Joyce Culpeper belonged to the English nobility. On the basis of her second marriage with the English magnates, Edmund Howard, she was the sister of Elizabeth Boleyn and the aunt of Anne Boleyn, Mary Boleyn and George Boleyn.

Life

Joyce Culpeper was first marriage with Ralph Legh (Leigh ). The marriage produced at least five known children were born:

  • Isabel Leigh (c. 1495-7 -? ), With Edward Baynton one of the largest landowners in Wiltshire heiratete.Had issue.
  • Margaret Leigh (after 1496 -? )
  • Joyce Leigh (after 1496 -? )
  • John Leigh (after 1496 -? )
  • Ralph Leigh (after 1496 - before 1563)

Joyce Culpepers first husband Ralph Leigh died about 1509/10 and she married Lord Edmund Howard. For the Culpeper family, this connection was prestigious, although it is only a younger and penniless son of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk acted. However, the marriage meant a connection to the English nobility.

  • Henry Howard ( after 1515 -? )
  • Charles Howard ( after 1515 -? )
  • Catherine Howard ( 1521 /5 - February 13, 1542 ) She later married the English king Henry VIII.

Death

The exact date of death of Joyce Culpeper is not known. The Catherine Howard biographer Joanna Denny assumes that Joyce Culpeper died at the birth of Catherine Howard.
