Jozias van Aartsen

Jozias Johannes van Aartsen ( born December 25, 1947 in The Hague) is a Dutch politician. He was between 1998 and 2002 Foreign Minister of the Netherlands and has since March 27, 2008 Mayor of The Hague.

Biography

Van Aartsen, son of politician Jan van Aartsen, first studied law at the Free University of Amsterdam and was then 1970-1974 for the parliamentary faction of the conservative-liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy ( VVD) operates. By 1979, he then worked as director of the Research Institute of the VVD.

Since 1979 he held a position in the Ministry of Interior and its Secretary General in 1983. In the first Cabinet Wim Kok he was on August 22, 1994 Minister of Agriculture and at the same time responsible for fisheries. After the parliamentary elections of 6 May 1998 van Aartsen was ( swearing August 3 ) as successor to Hans van Mierlo in the new edition of the so -called " purple coalition " foreign minister. Van Aartsen remained Foreign Minister until 22 July 2002.

In May 2003, he was elected chairman of the VVD faction. On March 8, 2006, however, he announced his resignation. The reason he gave to the disappointing election result of his party VVD, the repeated clearly lost in the municipal votes.
