József Pintér

József Pintér ( born November 9, 1953 in Budapest) is a Hungarian chess Grandmaster, chess trainer and chess writer.

Chess career

Pintér 1976 International Champion, 1982 Grand Master. In the 1970s and 1980s, he was one of the best Hungarian chess players, and was within reach of the world's elite. Pintér played three times in the Interzonal 1982 in Las Palmas, he was eighth, 1985 in Taxco Tenth and Eleventh 1987 in Zagreb. In his career he fought har a number of very good placements in international tournaments he won in 1979, 1982 and 1983 in Rome, 1985 in Prague, Copenhagen and - together with Tukmakow - the Grandmaster tournament in Szirák. Pinter won in 1987 in Warsaw and in 1991 in the city of Be'er Sheva.

Overall Pintér has participated eight times ( in the years 1980 to 1998) with the Hungarian national team in chess Olympiads, he scored 43 points in 68 games this. Pinter won two Olympic medals: Gold in 1984 for his individual performance on the first reserve board and silver with the team in 1980.

He has also won two silver medals at European Team Championships. In the years 1978 and 1979 Pinter won the Hungarian National Championship.

His victory with Black against Lajos Portisch in the Hungarian Championship in 1984 was elected from the 37th Chess Informant for best game of the first half.

His current Elo rating is 2536 (as of January 2008), his best was 2595, the best historical Elo rating, he achieved in October 1987 with 2681st

Coach

Since 2005, Pintér is coach of the Hungarian national team. He has been head coach in the Géza Maroczy chess school of the Hungarian Chess Federation.
