Juan Arza

Juan Arza Íñigo ( born June 12, 1923 in Estella, † July 17, 2011 in Seville), also known as Arza, was a Spanish football player and coach.

Playing career

Association

Arza played in his youth for CD Izarra, the club of his hometown. Through his great talent, he quickly made a talking point. Do not even of age, he had already completed a trial with first division club Espanyol. Although the leaders of the association gave the green light for an obligation Arza rejected a move to the Catalans, due to the great distance from his hometown. When he was a short time later courted by Deportivo Alavés, he took their offer only on condition to be able to ride every day after training home.

Thanks to its impressive performances at Alavés it was not long until the big clubs again knocked on his door. In 1942 he finally moved to CD Málaga in the Segunda División. Although he also demonstrated his class here, the club from Andalusia dismounted at the end of the season. Since Málaga was now faced with financial problems, the club was forced to put Arza on the transfer list. Then this rejected another offer from Espanyol Barcelona as well as an offer from Real Madrid. Instead, he moved in 1943 to nearly 90,000 pesetas for Sevilla FC and signed a five year contract at the first division.

In Seville, the 20- year-old received from the beginning the full confidence of coach Patrick O'Connell. His debut was therefore already on the opening day of the season 1943/44. Sevilla met CE Sabadell and won thanks to three goals from Arza 5-2. Then the young Spaniard received from his coach nicknamed " El niño de oro " (Eng. " Golden Boy "). At the end of the season Arza had managed 17 goals in 25 games. Sevilla finished third.

The following season was a disappointing one. Although Arza shot another 13 goals in 25 games, Sevilla landed at the end of the season only in tenth place. Coaching career
