Juan Bautista Plaza

Juan Bautista Plaza Anfonzo ( born July 19, 1898 in Caracas, † January 1, 1965 ) was a Venezuelan composer and musicologist.

Life

Plaza began in 1916 a piano and music theory studies at Jesús María Suárez. After he had spent a year and two years of medical law, he received in 1920 a scholarship for the study of Sacred Music in Rome, from which he graduated in 1923. After his return to Caracas, he was conductor and organist at the cathedral of the city. He held this position until 1948.

From 1924 to 1928 he was professor of harmony and composition at the Escuela Nacional de Música de Caracas. 1931 created the Ministry of Culture for him a chair of music history and aesthetics at the same school, a position he held until 1962.

From 1936 to 1944 he worked on the material held by the Escuela National music of Venezuela during the colonial period. As a result, twelve volumes were published with sheet music in collaboration with the Instituto de Interamericano Musicologia Montevideo.

In 1945, the Plaza Escuela de Música Preparatoria (today Escuela Juan Manuel Olivares ), which he headed from 1948 to 1962.
