Juan de Ribera

Juan de Ribeira (* March 20, 1533 in Seville, Spain, † January 6, 1611 in Valencia, Spain) was Archbishop of Valencia. He is a saint in the Catholic Church.

Juan, who studied at the University of Salamanca, received in 1557 the priest. Pope Pius IV appointed him in 1562 to the Bishop of Badajoz. In 1568 he became archbishop of Valencia, Patriarch of Antioch. From 1602 he also served as Viceroy of Valencia. Juan convened several synods to implement the decisions of the Council of Trent.

He was beatified in 1796 and Pope John XXIII. Canonized in 1960.
