Juan de Saavedra

Juan de Saavedra (* in Valparaíso de Arriba, Cuenca province, † May 21 1554 in Chuquinga, Peru ) was a Spanish conquistador

Juan de Saavedra served under Diego de Almagro (father) in 1535 in the conquest of Peru. In 1536 he discovered with his ship the bay of Valparaíso. Officially, the city was founded in 1544 by Juan Bautista Pastene. In 1541 Diego de Almagro killed ( son ) Francisco Pizarro and appointed himself captain-general of Peru. Juan de Saavedra took part in the Battle of Chupas against Diego de Almagro on September 16, 1542. Chief Justice Vaca de Castro took Diego de Almagro caught and let him and his followers to death.

Saavedra 1547 took part in the Battle of Jaquijaguana. In 1549 he was appointed governor of Cuzco, but dropped off in 1551. He died in battle in the rebellion of Francisco Giron in 1554 at Chuquinga (Peru ).
