Juan Gelman

Juan Gelman ( May 3, 1930 in Buenos Aires, † January 14, 2014 in Mexico City) was an Argentine poet, prose writer, journalist and translator. He was the 2007 Cervantes Prize awarded to one of the most important literary awards the Spanish-speaking world.

Life

Juan Gelman was born in 1930 in Buenos Aires in the district of Villa Crespo, the third son of Jewish immigrants from Russia. He learned to read very early and worked in his youth in various literary movements. Even as a journalist, he has held important functions.

Gelman lived since 1975, longer due to his political commitment period in exile. During the military dictatorship in Argentina, his son Marcelo was established in 1976 kidnapped, tortured and murdered -. , Refer to his poem MA, printed in Marcelo Brodsky's essay Buena Memoria of 1997 Gelman at the time pregnant daughter María Claudia García de Gelman was also part of Operation Condor 1976 kidnapped in Buenos Aires and brought to Uruguay. Gelman died on January 14, 2014 in Mexico City at the age of 83 years. The Argentine President Cristina Kirchner then ordered a three-day national mourning in Argentina.
