Juan Martínez de Ampiés

Juan Martín de Ampiés or Juan Martínez de Ampués (* in Zaragoza, † February 8, 1533 on Hispaniola ) was a Spanish officer of the 16th century. He was Regidor in Santo Domingo and founded in 1527, Coro, the first city of Venezuela.

Juan Martinez de Ampíes was an officer in the Spanish army under Ferdinand II during the campaigns of the League of Cambrai in Italy. On 19 May 1511 the king appointed him to the USTR for Hispaniola. The governor of Santo Domingo sent him to Venezuela to combat the slave trade with Indians, pirates operated in the region.

He arrived with 60 soldiers on the coast of Coriana, concluded an agreement with the caciques Manaure and founded on July 26, 1527 ( the Annentag ) the city of Santa Ana de Coro.

When Charles I. transferred the sovereignty of Venezuela to the Welser, Ampíes had to return to Santo Domingo. The Wels took advantage of the situation to get back to operate the slave trade and violating the peace treaty with the Indians.
