Jubilaeum Maximum

With the Papal bull jubilee maximum from May 26, 1949, proclaimed by Pope Pius XII. the Holy Year in 1950, he laid the beginning for Christmas 1949 and the end firmly on Christmas 1950.

Objective of the Jubilee

The Pope stated that the anniversary mainly have the task to call the Christians not only to atone for past guilt and inner conversion, but to cheer even to virtue and to live a holy life. The pope proclaimed a plenary indulgence of sin penalties ( plenissimam Totius poenae indulgentiam ) and laid down the conditions for religious and liturgical nature. He spoke of his desire that the Holy Year " a general return of all mature approach to Christ."

Discharge rules

One of the prerequisites for obtaining the plenary indulgence was the visit of the four major basilicas in Rome, a category which includes St. John Lateran, St. Peter's Basilica, St. Paul Outside the Walls and the Santa Maria Maggiore.
