Juglone is a naturally occurring dye with the systematic chemical name 5 -hydroxy-1 ,4- naphthalindion or 5 -hydroxy-1 ,4 -naphthoquinone, which is derived from the naphthoquinones.

Juglone can be isolated from walnut shells, and also produced synthetically. Walnut trees emit the substance through their roots into the soil and thus hinder root growth of other plants, making them competitors to stay away for water and nutrients. Juglone has antibacterial and fungitoxic action and affects blood circulation breastfeeding ( antihämorrhagisch ). As has been shown, among others, in animal studies, juglone is also mutagenic.

Juglone is isomeric to Lawson, the dye of henna leaves.
