Juillaguet

Juillaguet is a municipality with 142 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Charente region of France in the Poitou -Charentes.

Location

Juillaguet lies at an altitude of about 180 meters above sea level. inst about 23 km ( driving distance ) south of Angouleme in the ancient cultural landscape of the Angoumois. The river originates Tude west of the town.

Demographics

In the first half of the 19th century the population of the municipality was always at about 250 people to descend continuously thereafter as a result of the phylloxera crisis in the wine and the mechanization of agriculture on the lows of the last decades of the 20th century. Only at the beginning of the 3rd millennium, the population stabilized again.

Economy

The inhabitants of Juillaguet lived for centuries on the principle of self-sufficiency from agriculture; the bottoms of the community belong to the Bons Bois of the vineyard Cognac, but the paragraphs in expensive brandies and even with wine in recent decades tended to shrink, so that the wine industry plays any role. Revenue from tourism, especially the rental of apartments ( gîtes ), are an important source of income since the 1960s.

History

An ancient Roman road ( Chemin BOISNE ) Saintes ( Mediolanum Santonum ) to Perigueux ( Vesunna ) led through the territory of the municipality. The Romanesque church points to an existing already in the Middle Ages site.

Attractions

  • The single-nave Romanesque church ( Église Saint- Hilaire ) dates back in parts to the 12th century, but was later changed several times - among others two side chapels were added. Even the simple bell tower seems to be a later addition.
  • The two-storey Château de Juillaguet ( often referred to simply as lodging) is - hidden behind bushes and trees - in the town center and is privately owned.
