Jukka-Pekka Saraste

Jukka -Pekka Saraste ( born April 22, 1956 in Heinola, Finland) is a Finnish conductor.

Saraste first studied violin and began his career as a violinist with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In the class the teacher Jorma Panula he trained as a conductor at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and then switched mid-1980s the profession.

In 1983 he founded together with Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, which is mainly dedicated to the interpretation of contemporary music. In 1987 he was appointed chief conductor of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, which he headed until 2002. Parallel to this, he served from 1994 to 2002 as music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. As Principal Guest Conductor Saraste was associated from 2002 to 2005 the BBC Symphony Orchestra and since 2006 he has the principal conductor at the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra held.

With many renowned ensembles and orchestras Jukka -Pekka Saraste has conducted concerts ahead to call would be the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the Filarmonica de la Scala in Milan and the Staatskapelle Dresden. Among his many recordings, especially the recording of all the symphonies of Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen were highlighted.

Since 2008, Jukka -Pekka Saraste Artistic Director of the Sibelius Festival in Lahti. In 2000 he was awarded the Finnish State Prize for music, and also the Sibelius Medal and in Norway the Sibelius Prize he was awarded in Finland.

With the beginning of the season 2010/2011 he took up the position of Chief Conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne. His contract was extended in May 2012 to 2016.
