Jules Anspach

Jules Anspach (* 1829, † 1879) was a Belgian lawyer, mayor of Brussels and member of the Belgian House of Representatives. Anspach has shaped the face of downtown Brussels largely by its extensive urban renewal project.

Life

Anspach was born in a Brussels Calvinist family that had immigrated from Geneva to Belgium. His father François Anspach († 1858) was a member of the Belgian House of Representatives. Jules Anspach studied law at the University of Brussels and completed his studies with a doctorate. How many liberal Belgian politician of the time was Anspach Freemasons.

Anspach gelanjg a rapid rise in the Brussels city council, already with 34 years he was mayor, an office which he held until his death. He was instrumental in the urban transformation of Brussels in the style of historicism, comparable to the same time carried out construction work of Baron Haussmann in Paris.

After Anspach is the Boulevard Anspach, one of the principal axes of the Brussels city center, named.
