Jules Bastide

Jules Bastide (* November 21, 1800 in Paris, † March 2, 1879 ) was a French politician and journalist.

Life

The son of a broker was a student at the Lycée Henri IV, studied law for a time and worked in the lumber business. In 1821 he joined the Charbonnerie that began in the time of the Restoration against the monarchy. After the July Revolution of 1830 Bastide was given a job as an artillery captain of the National Guard, but remained in opposition to the monarchy under Louis Philippe. On June 5, 1832, he attended the funeral of General Lamarque and was sentenced on the occasion of the subsequent uprising to death. Bastide escaped from prison and went into exile in London. After his return to Paris two years, he was acquitted by a jury. In 1836 he took up a career at Le National Journal Republican and led it after the death of Armand Carrel for some time. Ten years later he left due to philosophical disagreements with the majority of the employees of the sheet editing and worked with Philippe Buchez at the Revue nationale. After the February Revolution of 1848 he was appointed on 28 February 1848 Secretary General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on 11 May 1848, he took over the office of minister, which he - held until December 20, 1848 - with a brief interruption. Even before that, on May 23, was elected deputies in the Assemblée constituante for the department of Seine- et- Marne. After the coup of Louis Napoleon in 1851, he retired from public life. In 1857 he joined unsuccessfully for election to Parliament. Bastide died on March 2, 1879 in Paris.
