Jules Favre

Jules Claude Gabriel Favre ( born March 21, 1809 in Lyon, France, † January 19, 1880 in Versailles, France) was a French politician. From 1870 to 1871 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of national defense.

From 1848 to 1851 Favre was a member of the moderate bourgeoisie in the French parliament. On the side of Adolphe Thiers, he fought politically against Napoleon III. 1857 to 1863 he was a member of the Legislative Assembly. In the final phase of the liberal empire he led the Republican movement and suppressed the revolutionary ingredients.

Favre and Léon Gambetta called for the establishment of Napoleon III. by the Prussians on September 4, 1870 in Paris, the Third Republic from what Favre was given the post of foreign minister. His most important political goal was a truce with the German Reich, which he signed for France on January 28, 1871. On 10 May 1871, he signed with Chancellor Otto von Bismarck the Peace of Frankfurt Germany. The results of both negotiations rated Favre as a serious national and personal defeat, agreed to the deal but in the face of impending military disaster.

In the spring of 1871 he was chosen prior to the Paris Commune.

On August 2, 1871 Favre gave his office and retired into private life.
