Jules Vuillemin

Jules Vuillemin (* February 15, 1920 in Pierre Fontaine- les- Varans in Franche -Comté; † 16 January 2001 Fourgs ) was a French philosopher and logician.

Life

Vuillemin attended the Lycée Louis -le- Grand in Paris and from 1939 to 1943, the École Normale Supérieure, where he 1943 " Agrégation de philosophie " acquired. In 1948 he submitted his Thèse L' être et le travail, les conditions de la psychologie dialectiques et de la sociologie, which corresponds to the German Habilitation. He taught from 1944 to 1950 at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique. From 1950 to 1962 he was a professor at the University of Clermont -Ferrand. In 1962, he joined the successor of Maurice Merleau -Ponty, the Chair of epistemology ( " philosophy de la connaissance ") at the Collège de France, which he held until 1990.

Work

Vuillemin mainly dealt with questions of logic, philosophy of mathematics and the history of philosophy and the philosophy of science, but he has also turned to almost all other areas of philosophy and its history in his twenty books and hundreds of articles. He was one of the very few French writers who followed the developments of analytical philosophy and mathematical logic in England and in the United States and even contributions to it contributed that were at the level reached there during the 1950s and 1960s.

Although Vuillemin reached a low level of awareness to a wider audience, it is next to Jean Georges Canguilhem Cavaillès and a central position in the history of French philosophy in the twentieth century. In a time in which phenomenology and existentialism in France dominated, who had also designed his first books, he held fast to the tradition of epistemology Gaston Bachelard. L' héritage Kantien from 1955 is a history of the philosophy of Subjekitivität and by the end, the considerable influence on Michel Foucault's Les mots et les choses ( The Order of Things ' ) and its diagnosis of the "end of man" as a philosophical concept exercised.

As a historian of philosophy presented Vuillemin in imitation of Martial Guéroult a typology of philosophical systems, whose logical structure he derived in his book Nécessité et contingence of 1984 from their different answers to a fundamental basic logical problem which Diodorus Cronus logos in its antinomy of Kyrieuon had formulated. Since these responses are mutually incompatible, there is an irreducible pluralism of philosophy, the history of which can be considered as a diskontiniuerliche sequence of systems that reformulate the logically possible answers to this fundamental problem.
