Julia Carson

Julia May Carson ( born July 8, 1938 in Louisville, Kentucky, † December 15, 2007 in Indianapolis, Indiana, born Julia May Porter) was an American politician of the Democratic Party.

Julia Carson attended Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis, where she graduated in 1955. After she graduated from Martin University and the Indiana University -Purdue University Indianapolis. Professionally, she worked as a secretary of the United Auto Workers union; then it was from 1965 to 1972 assistant on the staff of Congressman Andrew Jacobs. From 1972 to 1976 she was a member of the House of Representatives from Indiana; then she sat until 1990 in the Senate of Indiana.

From 7 January 1997 to her death, she was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States. She was after Katie Hall is the second African American to be elected as a representative of the State of Indiana. She died of a bronchial carcinoma and possibly a soft tissue infection of the leg, which she had suffered after bypass surgery.

Her grandson Andre Carson won the by-election to their mandate.
