Julia Sampson Hayward

Julie Ann Sampson Hayward (also known as Julia Sampson, born February 2, 1934 in Los Angeles, California, † December 27, 2011 in Newport Beach, California ) was an American tennis player.

Life

Sampson, born in 1934 in Los Angeles, grew up in San Marino and attended high school in South Pasadena. Even as a teenager, she began playing tennis and won in 1952 at the National American Championships junior title. In 1952 and 1953 she was out under the top ten tennis players of the United States.

Career

Sampson was in 1953 in a total of six finals at Grand Slam tournaments, of which she won two. They celebrated their first success at the Australian Tennis Championships (now the Australian Open ) in women's doubles with her doubles partner Maureen Connolly, against which they lost the individual competition in the final. With the Australians Rex Hartwig they took another tournament victory of the mixed competition.

There were other finals at the French Tennis Championships (now the French Open ), and at the Wimbledon Championships, as well as in the mixed doubles at the U.S. Championships (now the U.S. Open).

Julie Sampson died on December 27, 2011 in Newport Beach at the age of 77 years from the consequences of a fall.
