Julian Carroll

Julian Morton Carroll ( born April 16, 1931 in West Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky ) is an American politician and former governor of the state of Kentucky.

Early years and political rise

Julian Carroll studied at the University of Kentucky law and passed his examination in 1956. Subsequently he served in the U.S. Air Force his military service. After his return to civilian life, he opened a law office in Paducah. In 1962 he was elected to the House of Representatives from Kentucky. In the years 1968 and 1970 he was even President of the House ( Speaker). In the elections of 1971, the Democrat Carroll was elected Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky. As Governor Wendell Ford in December 1974 resigned his office to U.S. Senator in Washington DC to be, Carroll followed him as governor.

Governor of Kentucky

His first task was the completion of fractured his predecessor, who still ran until December 1975. For the elections of 1975, Carroll presented themselves for election. He managed a clear victory with 62.8 % of the vote against Robert E. Gable, who came to 37.2 %. During his tenure, he promoted the education policy by raising teacher salaries and increased the budget for public schools. Furthermore, it was in Kentucky established a Department of Energy ( Department of Energy). Carroll was desperate to coal as an energy source to solve the energy crisis.

Carroll's term of office ended on 11 December 1979. Afterwards he returned to his legal practice. In 1987, he sought to re- nomination of his party for the office of governor. However, this attempt failed already in the primaries. Since 2004 he is a member of the Senate from Kentucky. Julian Carroll is married to Charlann Harting, with whom he has four children.
