He studied philosophy at La Flèche 1627-1630 and 1630-1633 Greek and Latin at the College of Quimper, then from 1633 to 1634 and from 1634 to 1638 in Tours theology in Bourges. After a blood poisoning, he vowed to devote his life to the single mission in Brittany, whereupon he was miraculously healed. 1630 he met Father Michel Le Nobletz ( 1577-1652 ), and began to learn Breton. However, it did not interest him the language itself, he saw it only as a tool to convert the locals. On June 6, 1637 he was ordained a priest and spent his three-year novitiate at Rouen.

Traveled in 1640, he returned to Quimper and began to preach along with Father Pierre Bernard the arms of Lower Brittany in the footsteps of Father Michael Le Nobletz. He prayed for a day in the chapel Ti Mamm Doue to the Blessed Virgin to better language skills, and the next day he wrote the first catechism Breton. 1641, he led in Douarnenez by his first mission.

Maunoir took pictures and hymns ( cantiques ) to teach the locals in dogmatics, and had, among others, the pagan menhir of Saint- Uzec with images of the suffering Christ tools provided. He taught for 42 years, supported by many other priests, most French people. Maunoir insisted, however, that they are the folk language, learned Breton, which is why his book " Le Le Collège de Jésus Sacrè, divise en cinq classes" of 1659 also contained a grammar and a Breton dictionary.

Maunoir was also politically active. As April 1675 the revolt of the Bonnets Rouges, or Torrebens broke out because of the paper timbre of new royal stamp duties, preaching Maunoir and other Jesuits against the insurgents. The rebellion was put down in September 1675 by the troops of Louis XIV, condemned the insurgents to death or to the galleys. Maunoir fought decide mistaken belief that paganism and black magic.

Maunoir died in Plévin of pneumonia and was buried in the local parish church. Traces his teaching settled in Brittany still the early 20th century to prove.

He was beatified on 20 May 1951 by Pope Pius XII. appointed protector of Brittany.
