Julian of Le Mans

Saint Julian (us) (or St. Julian; French Saint Julien du Mans, † 348) was the first bishop of Le Mans, and since 1158 the patron saint of the French diocese and the Cathedral of Le Mans. He is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church as a saint. His feast day is 27 January.

Life

Saint Julian was born at the end of the 3rd century and was from 301 until his death in 348 bishop of Le Mans. He was the predecessor of St.. Liborius. About his work as a bishop, little is known. Before the time as bishop, he was probably working as a missionary in the area between Tours and Le Mans.

The basilica over his grave was first mentioned in 619. In the year 835 the relics of St. Julian were brought to the Cathedral of Le Mans. Since 1243 there are also some relics in Paderborn.
