Julian Schnabel
Julian Schnabel ( born October 26, 1951 in New York City, New York) is an American painter and film director.
Life and work
The son of Jewish parents, his father was a successful businessman who grew up in Brooklyn. 1965 moved his family, who also belong to two older siblings, to Brownsville (Texas ). After moving to the countryside Schnabel began to suffer from loneliness, sought solace in painting and spent the summer of 1969 in San Francisco.
Schnabel studied from 1969 to 1973 at the University of Houston in Texas. In the years 1973 and 1974 he attended the " Independent Study Program " at the Whitney Museum in New York. In 1976, he worked as a cook in " Mickey Ruskin 's Ocean Club Restaurant ", from 1976 to 1979 was followed by extended stays in Italy, France and Spain, 1978, in Germany.
He is regarded as one of the main proponents of neo-expressionism / New Image Painting. Many of his works are painted on uneven surfaces of broken glass or porcelain. Since 2010, hangs in the foyer of the Opera Tower in Frankfurt am Main, his painting Ahab. It is painted on a twelve meter high and forty feet wide face made out of recycled canvas and shows a blood-stained black whale and a stylized white swan, each reversals of technical terms from the financial world: white whale and black swan.
