Juliane Banse

Juliane Banse (born 10 July 1969, Tettnang ) is a German soprano.

Life and artistic work

Banse spent her childhood in Zurich. At the age of five she began playing the violin and took ballet lessons at the Zurich Opera. At 15, she received her first singing lessons with Paul Steiner and Ruth Rohner. After leaving school she studied in Munich with Brigitte Fassbaender and Daphne Evangelatos. At the age of 20 she was engaged at the Komische Oper in Berlin, where she made her debut as Pamina in The Magic Flute. This was followed by engagements in Brussels, Salzburg, Vienna, Glyndebourne and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Cologne. In 1998 she sang at the Zurich Opera, the title role in the premiere of Heinz Holliger's opera Snow White.

Her USA debut was in 1995 with Mahler's Second Symphony with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin. Until July 2007, she has taught as a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. In Munich she sang on 14 June 2008 on the reopening ceremony of the Cuvillies the theater Ilia in Idomeneo - new production of Dieter Dorn. The Whitsun Festival 2009 at the Festspielhaus Baden -Baden, she excelled as Agathe in a new production of the opera Der Freischütz, directed by Robert Wilson. In Jens Neubert's movie adaptation of Weber's most famous opera 2010 she played the role of the bride.

In addition to her stage presence Banse has worked as a recital and concert singer. She has performed, among others at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, the Vienna Konzerthaus, at the Wigmore Hall in London, in the United States, Japan, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, etc.

The artist has worked with many renowned conductors, among others the time with Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Carlo Maria Giulini, Bernard Haitink, Mariss Jansons, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Helmuth Rilling, to name just a few.

Juliane Banse is married to the violinist and conductor Christoph Poppen, with whom she lives in Diessen.
