Juliane House

Juliane House (* 1942) is a qualified translator and researcher at the Hellenic American University in Athens and professor emeritus at the University of Hamburg.

Life

Juliane House graduated in 1966 from as a translator for English and Spanish and International Law in Heidelberg with diploma. Already during her studies she worked as a translator and language teacher. After her studies she also worked as a market researcher and assistant in a library instead of the York University in Toronto. In the years 1970 and 1971 Juliane House acquired in addition the financial statements B. Ed. , MA and PhD at the University of Toronto and is dedicated to teaching and research in the field of communication and culture.

Teaching

A professorship joined their research and teaching at the University of Toronto and the University of Bochum, Institute of General and Applied Linguistics, University of Hamburg, in the Department of Language Teaching Research, she taught as a foreign language in the priority areas English and German. Since 2008 she has been Professor Emeritus of Language Teaching Research at the University of Hamburg. In the same year Juliane House began with the support of the PhD candidates in the field of Applied Linguistics at the Hellenic American University in Athens.

Research

Her research interests include translation theory, contrastive pragmatics, discourse analysis, intercultural communication, misunderstanding in intercultural discourse, politeness theories and English as a lingua franca. She participated in various research projects, such as the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS ), in part. In addition, they conducted now the Research Centre on Multilingualism at the University of Hamburg and since 2010 President of the " International Association for Translation and Intercultural studies" ( IATIS ).

Honors

Juliane House received the 1998 an honorary doctorate from the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) and the "Distinguished Scholar Award 1996/1997 Language Learning " at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, as well as the 1997 "Distinguished Scholar in Residence Program" of the University of Ottawa.
