Julie Clary

Marie- Julie Clary Bonaparte ( born December 26, 1771 in Marseille, † April 7, 1845 in Florence) was Queen of Naples, Sicily and Spain.

She was the daughter of François Clary (1725-1794), a merchant from Marseille, and his wife Françoise Rose Somis ( 1737-1815 ).

On August 1, 1794 she was married in Cuges -les-Pins in Marseille with Joseph Bonaparte, the elder brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. Her sister was engaged to Désirée Napoleon Bonaparte, but the marriage did not materialize. She was married to the French marshal Jean -Baptiste Bernadotte, who as King Charles XIV John ascended the Swedish throne in 1818.

Through her ​​marriage to Joseph, she was Queen of Naples and Sicily in 1806 and 1808 to 1813 Queen of Spain. The marriage produced three children:

  • Julie Joséphine Bonaparte (1796-1796)
  • Laetitia Julie Bonaparte Zénaïde (1801-1854); Charles Lucien Bonaparte ∞, a son of Napoleon's brother Lucien
  • Charlotte Bonaparte Napoleone (1802-1839); ∞ Napoléon Louis Charles, a son of Napoleon's brother Louis

After the overthrow of Napoleon and her husband had to go into exile in 1815, first to America. Only in 1841, they returned to Europe and settled in Florence.

Nearly a year after her husband died Julie in Florence and was buried in the Basilica of Santa Croce.
