Julie Tullis

Julie Tullis ( born March 15, 1939 † 6 / August 7th, 1986 at K2) was a mountaineer and filmmaker from the UK. She died during the black summer ' in 1986 during the descent from K2.

Early life

Julie Tullis was born as the daughter of Erica and Francis Palau. In 1956, she began climbing near Tunbridge Wells, where she met Terry Tullis. In 1959 she married and lived by many smaller shops. Both made with climbing at this time on, while Julie also learned Aikido.

Career

Julie met in 1976 the famous Austrian climber Kurt Diem Berger. 1981 promoted Diem Berger Tullis as a technical companion for an expedition to Nanga Parbat, and so began her film career in 8000. So she made in this context expeditions about the infamous North ridge of K2 and the north-east ridge of Mount Everest. 1984 Julie Tullis boarded and Kurt Diemberger Broad Peak (K3 ), and after further film work they put their work in 1986 with an expedition with the aim of ascent of K2 on.

K2, the mountain of mountains

Although Tullis and Diem Berger finally managed to climb on 4 August 1986 and Tullis thus the first British woman on the K2 was, both were heavily exhausted from the long stay at about 8000 m ( see also death zone ). So rushed Tullis, and despite Diem Bergers successful backup, which initially saved two lives, it seems that they are internal injuries or head injuries drew upon that affected their coordination and vision. An additional influence of altitude sickness can not be excluded here as well. So no more snow could be melted and dehydration set in, which made all mountaineers in addition prone to Acute Mountain Sickness. Tullis condition deteriorated rapidly. Housed in another tent as Diemberger she died on the night of 6/7 August, the records of the two climbers Diem Berger and Willi Bauer contradict each other here in the time specified.

Julie Tullis was buried on the mountainside.
