Julio Estrada
Julio Estrada ( born April 10, 1943 in Mexico City) is a Mexican composer and musicologist.
Biography
The son of Spanish emigrants studied from 1960 to 1962 composition with Julián Orbón and then was a student of Olivier Messiaen ( 1965-1968 ), Nadia Boulanger and Iannis Xenakis ( 1967-1969 ). He also attended courses given by Karlheinz Stockhausen and György Ligeti ( at the Darmstadt Summer Courses 1972). Finally, in 1987, he studied Indian music at Kwan- Faré - Tze.
Since 1971 teaches Estrada composition at the Escuela Nacional de Música ( ENM ) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México ( UNAM), where he leads a seminar in composition theory and, since 1995, the Laboratorio de Creación Musical since 1985. He also works as a musicologist at the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas the UNAM and cared for since 1990 the research project Música, Sistema Interactivo de Investigación - Composición.
Estrada was a visiting professor at the Universities of Stanford (1981 ), San Diego ( 1982-1985 ), New Mexico (1987) and Rostock (1994 ) and multi lecturer at the Darmstadt summer courses (1984, 1992, 1998). Between 1984 and 1988 he published the ten-volume Encyclopedia La música de México.
