Julius Erasmus Hilgard

Julius Erasmus Hilgard ( born January 7, 1825 in Zweibrücken, Rheinland -Pfalz, † May 8, 1891 in Washington, DC) was an American scientist of German origin. He came along with his more famous father, Theodore Erasmus Hilgard and nine brothers and sisters at the age of 10 years in the United States.

There he studied civil engineering and mathematics, and accepted a professorship at the University of Pennsylvania. Because of his skills in surveying, he finally joined the U.S. Coast Survey Office (then United States Coast Survey, now National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA short ), whose chairman he was from 1881 to 1885.
