Julius Kariuki

Julius Kariuki ( born June 12, 1961 in Nyahururu ) is a retired Kenyan track and field athlete and Olympic champion.

His first international competition, he played at the Olympic Games in 1984, when he meter steeplechase was seventh in 3000. A year later, Kariuki was African champion. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul Kariuki was not considered a favorite. In the final, which was run very slow on the first few laps to Kariuki and Peter Koech were able to sell the remaining runners. One lap later moved Kariuki from his far more experienced compatriot of it and was Olympic champion.

In 1989 he won the 10,000 -meter run at the Universiade in Duisburg. The following year, he won the gold medal with ease in the steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games 1990. The steeplechase at the 1991 World Championships, he finished in fourth place. While sat Kariuki his career during a few years away, but the dominance of Kenyan runners was so great that he could not qualify for international championships.
