Julius Korngold

Leopold Julius Korngold ( along with his son Erich Wolfgang Korngold under the pseudonym Paul Schott, born December 24, 1860 in Brno / Moravia, † September 25, 1945 in Los Angeles ) was an Austrian music critic, pianist and lawyer.

Life

Korngold was born the son of a Jewish merchant. From 1881 to 1887, he studied law at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate there a doctorate in law ( Dr. jur. ). He also studied at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music under Franz Krenn and Anton Bruckner music theory and harmony. After his return to Brno Korngold completed his legal internship. At the same time he worked as a music critic for the day shall messengers in Brno. From his marriage with Josephine Witrofski had two sons, the musician Hans Robert Korngold (1892-1965) and the pianist, composer and conductor Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957), published by Julius Korngold joint works under the pseudonym Paul Schott. 1901 could be the family back down in Vienna. In 1902 he was appointed to Johannes Brahms ' recommendation to the Neue Freie Presse, which he first belonged as an editor of the arts section, from 1904 to 1934 as a music speaker. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich, the family fled to the U.S., where his son was already emigrated in 1936.

In 1955 in Vienna Penzing ( 14th district ) was named the Korngold alley after him.
