Julius Patzak

Julius Patzak ( born April 9, 1898 in Vienna, † 26 January 1974 Rottach -Egern ) was an Austrian opera and lieder singer (tenor ).

Life

After studying counterpoint and composition with Eusebius Mandyczewski, Guido Adler and Franz Schmidt Patzak worked as a church musician, suggested in 1926 as a self-taught artist the singing career and debuted in the same year as Radames in Verdi's Aida at the City Theatre in Liberec. 1927/28, he sang at the Municipal Theatre in Brno and in 1928 became engaged at the Bavarian State Opera, which celebrated member of the ensemble he remained until 1947. Internationally known Patzak was his Mozart roles at the Munich Festival in the thirties; he sang here in the premieres of the operas The heart of Hans Pfitzner (1931 ), The Peace of Richard Strauss ( 1938) and The Moon by Carl Orff ( 1939). Concert tours have taken him to Milan, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Budapest, Zurich and Prague. Patzak appeared almost every year, as well as a concert singer, at the Salzburg Festival. 1945-1959 he was a member of the Vienna State Opera, was from 1948 professor at the Vienna Academy of Music until 1966 and worked as a singer.

Patzak was also as an oratorio singer (Evangelist in the Bach Passions and especially as John in The Book with Seven Seals of Franz Schmidt) and Lieder singer appreciated ( Schubert's Winterreise, orchestral songs by Richard Strauss).

His last years were spent Patzak in Rottach -Egern. Among his successful roles included the Florestan in Fidelio and the title character in Pfitzner's Palestrina. He was buried at the Munich Forest Cemetery, age part.

Patzak was married his first wife, the opera singer Hedi Steiner, in a second marriage with Maria " Mimi " Walter, daughter of the royal bavarian. Chamber singer Raoul Walter (1863-1917), granddaughter of the Viennese imperial Chamber singer Gustav Walter ( 1834-1910 ). Patzak had a daughter Eva ( b. 1930 ), who was married to the actor Peter Pasetti.

In 2010 in Vienna Dobling ( 19th district ) of Patzakweg was named after the singer.
