Julius Penson Williams

Julius Penson Williams (born 1954 in New York City ) is an American conductor, composer and music teacher.

Biography

Williams studied at the Herman H. Lehman College of the City University of New York and at the Hartt School of Music. He taught at various colleges and universities before he became professor of composition and conducting at Berklee College of Music in Boston. As a conductor, he assisted Lukas Foss at the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the American Symphony Orchestra and conducted numerous well-known American and European symphony and chamber orchestras.

He served as artistic director at the Costa del Sol Festival in Spain and the New York State Summer School of the Arts. In 1989, he conducted the opening concert of the Symphony Saint Paulia at Carnegie Hall, 1999, he opened the Tri -C Jazz Festival of Cleveland with a performance of Duke Ellington's Sacred Service.
