Julius Richard Petri

Julius Richard Petri ( born May 31, 1852 in Barmen, today part of Wuppertal, † December 20 1921 in Zeitz / Anhalt ) was a German bacteriologist. Petri invented in 1877 during his work with Robert Koch named after him petri dish.

Life

Petri studied 1871 - 1875 in Berlin at the Kaiser Wilhelm Academy medicine and worked for a short time as a military doctor before he went to the bacteriological institute by Robert Koch in 1886. In Görbersdorf Petri worked as an assistant to Hermann Brehmer at the sanatorium for lung patients. At the age of 25 years, Petri introduced in 1877 before the later named after him Petri dish of the research world. In addition to the petri dish he has also improved a number of working methods and equipment for medical use; including a sand filter and shipping containers for stool and urine samples. From 1889 Peter was a member of the Imperial Health Office and head of a bacteriological laboratory. He was at this time the title of the Government Council.

In 1900 he took the title of Privy Council Government into early retirement and took over the management of Brehmerschen sanatorium for three years in Görbersdorf.
