Julius Rudel

Julius Rudel ( born March 6, 1921 in Vienna ) is an American conductor of Austrian origin who was from 1957 to 1979 artistic director of the New York City Opera.

Biography

Julius Rudel began his musical education at the Music Academy in Vienna, but emigrated in 1938 because of the Nazis in the United States, where he continued his studies at the Mannes College of Music in New York.

In 1943 he was a coach at the New York City Opera and was the following year there his debut as a conductor with The Gypsy Baron by Johann Strauss. Artistic Director of the theater, he was then already from 1957 and until 1979., Where he studied include a wide repertoire from Monteverdi to Janacek.

He was also from 1962 to 1976 also artistic director of the Caramoor Festival in New York State and the first music director of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.
