Julius Watkins

Julius Watkins ( born October 10, 1921 in Short Hills / New Jersey, † April 4, 1977 in Detroit ) was an American horn player of jazz.

Even as a nine year old, he specialized in the French horn, but also played trumpet. He played from 1943 to 1946 with Ernie Fields and spent three years at the Manhattan School of Music to play in 1949 in the Milt Buckner big band. After that he was in bands of Kenny Clarke, Oscar Pettiford and Pete Rugolo (1954). In 1955 he played in the nonet of Gigi Gryce ( Nica 's Tempo). In 1956 he initiated with Charlie Rouse, the band Les Jazz Modes, the 10 - inch LP was released in Dawn. In 1958 he worked with Evans production of Porgy and Bess and the Evans Album New Bottle, Old Wine in the Miles Davis / Gil. Then he played with George Shearing, in the Quincy Jones Big Band (1959-1961) and Charles Mingus (1965, Let My Children Hear Music, 1971). He made recordings with other jazz stars, such as Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Milt Jackson, Miles Davis, John Coltrane ( Africa / Brass, 1961), Art Farmer and Pharoah Sanders ( Karma, 1969), but also with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra and Gil Evans (The Individualism of Gil Evans, 1964).
