Jumbo (Musical)

Jumbo is a musical circus revue, an extravaganza with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Lorenz Hart. The book is by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. In one of the main roles Jimmy Durante was seen. The premiere took place on 16 November 1935 at the Hippodrome Theatre in New York.

Background

The Broadway producer Billy Rose took Rodgers and Hart back for his circus - musical project from Hollywood to New York. He rented the largest New York theater, the Hippodrome Theatre, and had it rebuilt so that it looked like a circus tent inside. The production devouring a then-record sum of $ 340,000. The operation was so expensive that the show, although she was successful, after 233 performances had to close.

This was the first musical that George Abbott directed (in collaboration with John Murray Anderson).
