Jumilla (DO)

Jumilla is a wine region with denomination of origin (DO since 1966) in the Murcia region, the southernmost part of Levante in Spain. The name derives from the town of Jumilla. The total vineyard area is 41,300 ha The climate is strongly continental; the annual rainfall is only 300 mm and summer temperatures are often at 40 ° C. Alcohol- heavy, simple wines were traditionally produced there. The wine was often sold in barrels and served other regions to give their own wines more color and alcohol. In the late 1980s (ie, about 100 years later than in France and northern Spain), the area was infested by the devastating phylloxera. This forced growers to plant new and was generally used to plant varieties better and to raise the standard of quality. Jumilla is home to the variety Monastrell, which still today dominates over 85 % of the vineyard.

Although the share of exports from simple wines from Jumilla is already high, it seems to already talk about in Spain, that arise from this area also high quality wines with good value for money only now.

Major producers are Julia Roch e Hijos, bodegas, 1890, Casa de la Ermita, Bodegas Agapito Rico, Induvasa, Finca Luzon.
