Blazing Rush ( Juncus acutus )

The Blazing Rush ( Juncus acutus ) is a halophytic plant from the family of the Rushes ( Juncaceae ).

Description

The Blazing bulrush is a perennial plant that reaches the plant height of 30 to 150 cm. The plant forms large, dense clumps with stiff and pungent, terete leaves. The flowering shoots are 2 to 4 mm thick and are often dominated by the lowest, strongly pungent, stalk-like bract.

The Vielblütige inflorescence is usually dense and spherical. The 6 bracts, with a broad, membranous border, are approximately the same length. The three inner bracts are wider and have at the top of a membranous ears. Bloom time is from April to July. The egg-shaped capsule is about twice as long the perianth of 4 to 6 mm in size. The capsule is bespitzt short.

Occurrence

The Blazing Rush is ( as far north as Ireland) distributed along the coasts of the whole Mediterranean, the Atlantic, the Black and the Caspian Sea and the Canary Islands. As a location, sandy beaches and salt marshes are preferred. More rarely we find the Blazing rush inland.
