Junípero Serra

Fray Junipero Serra in Catalan or questions Juníper Serra (b. November 24, 1713 in Petra, Mallorca, † August 28 1784 in San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, California ) was a Franciscan, who is considered the founder of San Francisco.

Life

Junipero Serra was born in 1713 as Miquel Josep Serra i Ferrer. At the time, in his birthplace of Petra for over 100 years, a Franciscan convent which also gave education. At the age of 16 years of farmer's son Miquel Josep Serra entered the Franciscan Order and took the name of Fray Junípero Serra. He studied at the University " Lulliana " in Palma and earned a doctorate in theology. From 1744 to 1749 he worked in Palma as a preacher and lecturer at the local university. He then decided to go with a group of Franciscan missionary to Central America.

In the Viceroyalty of New Spain Junípero Serra was involved in the establishment of 21 missions and monasteries, especially in the north of the country (now California ) as the Mission Dolores in San Francisco. Many of the located in what is now California missions evolved over time to cities that still bear their Spanish names: San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Most of these names Junípero Serra directed by altars in the church of the Saint Bernardino of Siena dedicated to the Convention of the monastery of his native city of Petra from. The controversial case of Amerindian population missionary died in 1784 in what is now Carmel in California.

Junipero Serra is namesake of Serra International, an international Roman Catholic lay community to promote vocations.

Appreciation

Fray Junípero Serra was beatified in November 1988. In the U.S., he is revered as a founder of cities. His bust stands in the Capitol in Washington, DC, surrounded by other heroes of the American nation. In his birthplace of Petra, the missionary is omnipresent. On the northern edge of Petra is the parish church of Sant Pere, built from the 16th to the 18th century on the foundations of an older church. For the rich interior also includes the font, through which the newborn Josep Miquel was held. About the Carrer Major leads to the Convent de Sant - Bernardí, founded in 1607 and the seat of the Convent School Junipero Serra young. Outside the building is a memorial to different stages of his life. From Convention Carrer Fra Juníper leads westwards, passing a number of tile images of various missions, to the birthplace and museum of the Franciscan.

Casa Natal Museum Juníper i Serra: The birthplace of Junipero Serra stands in the oldest part of the town, in the street Carrer Barrancar old. Very close to home to a house built in 1959, the Museu de Pare Serra, a museum, the basis of maps, paintings and documentaries dedicated to the life of the missionary.
